Bluecaps in Brief: High Hopes

Bluecaps in Brief: High Hopes

6 May 2021

The Colts season is well underway and going great guns despite a smattering of rain affecting fixtures, but now it's the turn of the Seniors and Ladies to begin the hunt for that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, with pre-season under their belts they’re ready to start their league seasons, the Surrey Championship and Surrey Women's Cricket League respectively.

We begin where last Friday night was nearly alright for fighting in the CPL2021 live auction - the four CPL captains Ben Hanger, Luke Robertson, James Richards, and newbie Harry Nuti setting out their stalls to fight over 109 of you and secure their squads from the biggest draft ever.

The auction was split into two sections, consisting of a pre-selected group which was allocated into each team before the auction, then any players Captains wanted to bid on with their £20m were subsequently purchased then added to the squads too (whilst also retaining one player from last year's squad).

We had controversy - Greg’s gone for a Burton leaving the Bourne Stars for £1m, there was a tussle over Luke Westcott, a coin toss at the death, and some big virtual cash being splashed - Troy Bolger going for a cool £4m, and the savvy Captains bagging some bargains along the way - Fin Lloyd, Hugh Aish-Lyons for 1 mil a-piece? Sales of the century if you ask us.

If you want to check out the full squads head over to our CPL page over on the website: www.chertseycc.org.uk/pages/Chertsey-premier-league

These are the fixtures dates for your diary:

Round 1 - Sunday 30th May

Round 2 - Sunday 27th June

Round 3 - Sunday 25th July

Finals Day - Sunday 29th August

The evening of Monday 17th May sees a first for Chertsey CC - excitingly an open evening for ladies and girls cricket. All girls 12+ and ladies are very welcome to join us from 6pm. We will be hosting a friendly match with a mix of our newly formed Blueberries (our 12-15 year olds), and established sides Bluebirds (15+) and Ladies, as well as a sampler training session for any Mums, sisters, daughters, or friends who want to try out cricket for the first time (no experience necessary) - so pass on the details attached to anyone who might be interested and get them to email us with their details or if you are up for it yourself email us at comms@chertseycc.org.uk.

The Ladies begin their inaugural League campaign v Godalming at Abbey Field on Sunday afternoon from 2pm too, their first in this format - go well Ladies!

Next week also sees the 1st XI taking part in the first round of the T20 Surrey Championship Cup on Tuesday evening v Staines & Laleham.

Now, you're all doing great with navigating the Covid restrictions in place but please keep doing your best to stay safe and adhering to the rules that have been set out - just a reminder don't head out to the main club ground if you're planning on spectating unless you're a singular Colts parent attending a match, or for example when entering the club grounds for training do report to your wardens, scan the QR codes, be mindful of the social distancing rules. All spectators will be allowed back into the Club for games from Monday May 17th (handily coinciding with the reopening of the bar and the Ladies Open Evening) so more info on how we're going to reopen to members next week.

Notable Mentions

The final weekend of the pre-season saw a mixed bag of results against Old Ruts and Nomads, but threw up some firsts; debuts for Simon Bannister (Saturday) & Bonnie Edwards (Sunday) who was our first (we think ever... we'll wait while you check) mother and son teammate combo with son Henry, and last but not least a top score of 83 for Felix Reisch. We also saw some incredible figures from the Colts section over the week, a hat trick for James Pearson in the 4s, 3-28 for Josh Fyfe in the 3s on Saturday. On Sunday both Luke Russell & Barnaby Rowe retired in the U13s match v Whiteley Village, and over at Horsley & Send Ed Marsh, Ethan Austin, Mark Lemon, and Arthur Walmsley accumulated 143 runs between them, while Micky Grigg had a whale of a time snapping up 4 wickets for just 4 runs.
